Listening to New Babylon began as research into “smart/creative cities” in the context of the Interdisciplinary Research Group (KABK/ KC Den Haag) in 2021. It is also related to the audio walk Central Imaginary District” made for the Rewire Festival in 2019. Listening to New Babylon explores representation, creativity, and control of, and in, the city. The New Babylon of the title is here simultaneously Constant Nieuwenhuys’ utopian imaginary city and a concrete office/residential building with the same name in the centre of The Hague. By focussing on listening, the practice attempts to move beyond visual representations of the city to performative, embodied and partici- pative explorations. Listening to New Babylon plays with different forms, some open and collaborative, some documentary and historical.
